Apple Prices Watch Battery Replacement at $99 as watchOS 27 Drops Series 8 Support

Q: Why does Apple’s strict 80 percent battery rule leave so many frustrated smartwatch owners stranded?

Apple’s 80% battery threshold frustrates many Apple Watch owners because it is a rigid warranty rule that often does not match real-world usability. A watch can feel unreliable well before battery health falls below 80%, especially for people using sleep tracking, workouts, cellular service, always-on display, or all-day notifications. Yet AppleCare+ generally covers battery service only once the measured maximum capacity dips under that line. That gap leaves owners paying out of pocket even when daily performance has clearly worsened. Apple itself says aging batteries can cause shorter runtime, slower app launches, dimmer screens, lower speaker volume, and even missed heart-rate readings during workouts. A watch at 84% or 85% battery health may still fail to last through a normal day, but under Apple’s policy that is treated as normal aging, not a covered defect. The policy is more aggravating because Apple Watch batteries are hard to replace independently. Authorized battery service is available for about $99, but that can feel poor value on older models with fading resale prices and shrinking software support. Newer watches such as Series 6, 7 and later are usually worth repairing; older devices often are not. So owners can get stuck in an awkward middle ground: the battery is bad enough to disrupt daily use, but not bad enough for AppleCare coverage, and the watch may be too old to justify paying for service. That is why many feel stranded by the 80% rule.
