Summary
Gwinnett County jailers took 29-year-old Deja Coleman to a mortuary early Saturday, letting her grieve her son Daniel ahead of his ceremony while she remained in prison garb, handcuffs and ankle shackles.
Attorney Tom Ford said Coleman spent 45 minutes alone in the room and was allowed to view the photograph on the memorial flyer, her first private moment to grieve since she was booked.
Coleman is charged after police said she left 1-year-old Daniel Coleman Jr. in a car while she worked a hospital shift, leading to his death in late July.
Ford said Daniel had been teething the night of July 28 and Coleman had been up with him most of that night; the family was also living in a domestic violence shelter.
