Summary
Eighty-two adults with Prediabetes who added one avocado and one cup of mango daily for eight weeks showed better blood vessel function and lower diastolic blood pressure than a calorie-matched control group.
Flow-mediated dilation rose to 6.7% in the avocado-mango group, versus a decline to 4.6% in controls, indicating more flexible arteries and stronger cardiovascular function.
Men saw the clearest blood-pressure benefit: diastolic pressure fell about 1.9 mmHg with the fruit diet while rising 5 mmHg in the control group.
The gains came without changes in calorie intake or body weight, and the study found no significant shifts in cholesterol, blood sugar or inflammation markers.
Researchers said the results suggest nutrient-dense additions rather than major diet restrictions may help the 98 million Americans with prediabetes, though the eight-week study was board-funded and needs longer-term confirmation.
