8:06.10 gave Lani Pallister the 800m freestyle title in Irvine and Katie Ledecky’s first international defeat in the event after 16 years of dominance.
That win capped Pallister’s four-gold meet—200m, 400m, 800m and the 4x200m relay—making her one of the standout performers at the Pan Pacific Championships.
Australia finished with 15 gold medals overall, with Sam Short adding three individual titles in the 400m, 800m and 1,500m freestyle.
Short’s sweep also rewrote Australian history, as he broke national records previously held by Ian Thorpe and Grant Hackett.
