Usually, no. For most people, a short cleanup is cheaper than paying for more storage right away. The Android Authority example is a good illustration: a manual pass freed about 23GB on a 100GB Google One plan by targeting screenshots, duplicate-like stacks, and especially large videos. On typical Google One pricing, moving from free storage to 100GB or from 100GB to a larger tier generally costs only a few dollars a month. That means the economics hinge on your time: if cleanup takes several hours and your time is worth more than the annual cost difference, an upgrade may be the rational choice. But manual deletion is not all-or-nothing. The highest-return steps are fast: use Google One’s storage manager to find large photos and videos, empty trash so deleted files stop counting, and turn off backup for low-value folders such as screenshots and memes. Those actions often recover meaningful space in minutes, not hours. Changing Google Photos backup quality to Storage Saver can also slow future growth, though it affects quality and, unless you use Google’s separate “Recover storage” tool, mainly helps future uploads. The real answer is hybrid. If you are only a few gigabytes short, a targeted cleanup is usually worth it. If you are constantly hitting limits, store lots of 4K video, or would spend hours curating tens of thousands of files, paying for more storage is often the better bargain.
