Summary
Five teenagers died after a car drove the wrong way on the M9 in County Kildare and crashed head-on around 03:00 Sunday, with two women left critical and another woman and a 7-year-old boy seriously hurt.
Garda Representative Association official Tara McManus said officers had tried several times to stop the car, deployed stinger devices, then were ordered to disengage after it took evasive action and headed onto the motorway.
McManus said roads policing officers are not trained for pursuits and could face serious consequences for acting outside that training; she also said the crash scene may leave attending officers needing counselling for months or years.
The five victims were named locally, while the injured family is understood to be from Carlow; An Garda Síochána has been asked for comment as the crash intensifies scrutiny of road policing and dangerous driving.
Ireland has recorded 123 road deaths so far in 2026, up 18 from the same point in 2025, as road victims' advocates renewed calls for tougher penalties and earlier intervention for dangerous young drivers.
