Engadget Explains Why 240p Retro Games Look Better on CRT TVs Than 4K Panels

240p and 480i console games look better on CRTs because they were built for cathode-ray displays, not modern LCD and OLED panels that reinterpret those signals.
20FPS-era motion also held up better on CRTs: scanline drawing delivered clearer movement, while flat panels' sample-and-hold behavior made low, uneven frame rates look worse until high-refresh screens arrived.
480i deinterlacing and 240p misdetection add input lag and blur on modern TVs, and then upscaling a low-resolution image to 1080p or 4K further exposes artifacts unless a dedicated scaler is used.
Dithering, scanline gaps and deep-black presentation were part of the original art design, so effects in games like Final Fantasy Tactics, Silent Hill 2 and Doom 3 can look broken or washed out on newer displays.
CRTs still offer the most authentic experience, but Engadget says their weight, repair risks and rising collector prices make emulators, CRT filters and devices like Analogue 3D more practical for most players.
