At 18 months, mice had more than twice the plaque burden seen at six months, yet sleep disruption was not substantially worse, suggesting an early immune-response “ceiling effect.”
The study also found aging mainly reduced REM sleep, while amyloid pathology selectively cut non-REM sleep, the stage tied to recovery, memory and brain waste clearance.
Researchers say the mouse results are not a human treatment; the next step is testing whether microglia can be safely calmed—possibly with drugs such as metformin or stiripentol—and whether EEG patterns can help track disease.
