Summary
Fifteen people were arrested and seven vehicles impounded after Suffolk County police broke up an alleged street takeover around 12:50 a.m. Saturday on Sawgrass Drive in Medford.
Police said drivers had effectively shut down the road with reckless driving, donuts and burnouts, while spectators gathered around the stunt activity.
Investigators said the Street Takeover Task Force identified the planned gathering through intelligence and social media monitoring, then tracked the group as it moved from Islip to Patchogue before intercepting it in Medford.
Fourteen of the 15 suspects were charged with both participating in and spectating an unlawful speed contest, and police also issued multiple traffic tickets.
The arrests follow another Suffolk County takeover weeks earlier involving at least 200 ATVs, dirt bikes and motorcycles in Hauppauge and Brentwood, where three people were arrested and 10 vehicles impounded.
