Summary
Firefly will use its Elytra vehicle to draft a preliminary design for a Defense Innovation Unit and Space Development Agency mission to inspect and deorbit aging satellites.
The concept starts with an Elytra launch to low Earth orbit, followed by rendezvous, proximity operations, condition surveys and a controlled disposal push for the client spacecraft.
Firefly says its deorbit system can work in low, medium and geostationary Earth orbit, using avionics, structures and propulsion partly derived from its Blue Ghost lunar lander and other flight-proven hardware.
A successful preliminary design review would let Firefly compete for the next phase covering launch, spacecraft operations and the deorbiting campaign, as the Pentagon moves toward buying deorbiting as a service.
The award also fits Firefly's broader space push: Elytra is already being readied for a separate DIU mission no earlier than 2027, while Lockheed Martin could book up to 25 Alpha launches through 2031.
