Summary
Japan’s April-June GDP is forecast to expand an annualized 2.3%, up from 1.8% in Q1, with quarterly growth seen at 0.6% and marking a third straight increase.
Private consumption is expected to rise 0.5% and business investment 0.4%, supported by wage gains, factory and office upgrades, and digitization to address labor shortages.
July exports are projected to climb 21.2% from a year earlier despite U.S. tariffs, helped by autos, memory chips and non-ferrous metals, while imports are seen up 26.5% on energy costs and a weak yen.
That trade mix would leave Japan with a third straight monthly deficit, widening to about 570.7 billion from 409.9 billion in June.
July core CPI is expected to accelerate to 1.8%, but fuel and utility subsidies are still keeping all main inflation gauges just below the Bank of Japan’s 2% target.
