The tooth-count link held even after adjustments for tumor stage, lymph node spread, surgical margins, chemotherapy and nutritional status, suggesting oral health may capture broader long-term vulnerability rather than just cancer severity.
Chewing function itself did not independently predict survival, leading researchers to argue that tooth loss may reflect accumulated inflammation, frailty, smoking, diet, chronic illness and access to dental care.
The single-center Japanese study does not prove causation, and the team said larger multi-hospital studies are needed to test whether oral bacteria or chronic inflammation directly influence pancreatic cancer progression.
