Alan Tudyk’s key psychological trick is to start with a character’s physicality and let the voice emerge from that imagined body. In interviews around his Disney Legend honor, Tudyk said he learned on *Ice Age* that the best way to find an animated character’s voice is often to study how the character is designed and moves. Rather than inventing a voice in isolation, he looks at the face, posture and rhythm of the character and then “gets into a groove,” allowing the performance to grow out of movement. That method extends beyond animation. For his motion-capture role as Sonny in *I, Robot*, Tudyk prepared by studying Japanese Noh theatre, mime and clowning. Those forms helped him shape the robot’s behavior in a way that made it feel emotionally real, even before the final visual effects were added. He also builds voices by experimenting constantly with vocal qualities and by borrowing from observed speech patterns and classic performers. In Disney roles, that has meant trying accents, vowel sounds and tonal influences until something distinct appears in the studio. What makes the approach surprising is that for Tudyk, “faceless” characters are not created from voice alone. He treats them like full physical beings, using movement, rhythm and psychology to unlock a voice audiences believe.

Alan Tudyk said being named a Disney Legend came as an unexpected "tap on the shoulder" as Disney prepares to give its highest honor to 13 people at D23.
The company is recognizing Tudyk in the Film & Voice category for a body of work spanning characters such as King Candy in Wreck-It Ralph, the Duke of Weselton in Frozen and Valentino in Wish.
Tudyk said Disney roles pushed him to keep inventing new voices, often building them from animation references or classic performers, with King Candy remaining his favorite character.
He also pointed to motion-capture work in I, Robot and Star Wars' K-2SO as career milestones, saying Firefly changed his life and led to years of spaceship roles.
The Disney Legends ceremony, hosted by Ryan Seacrest, will close the final day of D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.
