California wildlife officials said Tuesday that Jackie, the 14-year-old bald eagle followed by millions on a Big Bear webcam, died after developing a large blood clot in her wing and kidney.
That explanation did little to calm some viewers, who said veterinarians and wildlife groups withheld too much information while Jackie was being treated offscreen at the Ojai Raptor Center.
Friends of Big Bear Valley and the raptor center said they were flooded with calls, messages and a petition demanding updates, while rumors spread online that Jackie’s condition was being hidden.
More than 460 million YouTube views have turned the Big Bear eagle cam into a mass audience phenomenon, and wildlife experts said that intimacy can fuel harassment when beloved animals fall ill or die.
