Summary
Triple-digit highs are set to spread across much of the South this week, with daily record temperatures possible from the lower Mississippi Valley to Florida and the Carolinas.
Heat index values are already topping 105 and 110 in parts of southern Georgia, coastal South Carolina, the Florida Panhandle and the Memphis area because a stubborn heat dome is trapping hot, humid air.
Nighttime relief will be limited: many areas will stay in the mid-70s by morning, while larger metro areas may only cool to the low 80s, raising heat-stress risks.
Kentucky, Tennessee and the southern Appalachians could see slight relief by late weekend, but much of the rest of the South is expected to stay under dangerous heat into at least next week.
