The red color associated with totality should largely be absent because a bright rim survives outside the umbra; even though the whole Moon sits in the penumbra at maximum, the visible contrast still favors a very dark or blackened shadow.

West Coast, Alaska and Hawaii viewers face poorer moonrise geometry, with many missing the opening or deepest phase, while the event remains safe to watch without filters or special equipment.
