Q: Why did Google release a location-sharing watch app that intentionally hides the map from its users?

It likely wasn’t released to “hide” the map so much as to ship a limited or incomplete first version of location sharing on Wear OS. The evidence in the rollout points that way. The new Find people app in Find Hub v1.0.429.0 clearly adds the account and permission layer to watches: it shows who can see your location and for how long. But it stops short of rendering a live map, instead pushing users back to the phone with “View their location on phone.” That suggests Google may have prioritized quick access to sharing status and controls on the watch, while leaving detailed map viewing to the larger phone screen. There is also reason to think the experience may not be final. Reports note that device tracking in Find Hub already supports maps, so the lack of one for people is inconsistent with the rest of the product. The same release also appears to contain a settings bug that opens Google Play services, which is another sign this rollout may be unfinished. A server-side enablement could still be missing. A practical explanation is that watches are best suited for glanceable information, not dense map interaction. Google has often split tasks this way across phone and watch, using Wear OS syncing to pass users into the richer phone interface when needed. So the map omission is most plausibly either a deliberate minimalist design choice for now, or a staged rollout of a feature Google has not fully switched on yet.
