Argonne researchers reported a purple membrane-BiOCl hybrid that produced more than five times as much hydrogen peroxide as BiOCl alone under the same lab conditions.
The 200-nanometer nanosheet uses light-driven charge transfer at the bio-inorganic interface to steer oxygen toward the two-electron pathway that forms hydrogen peroxide, while oxidizing ethylene glycol into chemicals such as glycolaldehyde and formic acid.
The work targets a $5.4 billion chemical whose current production is dominated by the anthraquinone process, which supplies more than 95% of output and carries roughly 1.79 to 2.5 kg CO2-equivalent per kg of hydrogen peroxide.
Unlike that centralized, energy-intensive route, the lab system runs at room temperature and atmospheric pressure with sunlight, air and water, pointing to possible on-demand production near users if scale-up proves feasible.
The JACS cover study still leaves key hurdles unresolved, including long-term stability of the purple membrane, industrial fabrication of the nanosheets and performance under real outdoor sunlight.
