Flinders University Finds Light Triggers Ferroelectric Switching After 1 Switch-Off

Near-visible light caused only minor changes during illumination, but Flinders researchers found ferroelectric nanodomains rapidly expanded once the light was turned off, temporarily switching the crystal surface’s electronic state.
Advanced microscopy and electrical measurements showed electrons build up near the surface while the light is on, then are suddenly released after switch-off, driving the rapid domain expansion.
The team said the delayed response could cut energy use and unwanted heating versus conventional light-controlled devices because the switching happens after illumination rather than during it.
Flinders and collaborators from UNSW Sydney, India and the U.S. now plan device prototypes aimed at miniaturized memory, sensing, information processing and other photonic or AI-related applications.
