R&T found the 2027 Sequoia Trailhunter handled nearly 10,000-foot trails, 102-degree heat and interstate cruising without faltering, giving Toyota’s full-size SUV a stronger off-road case.
Toyota’s new package adds Old Man Emu suspension, Michelin LTX Trail tires, underbody protection and a locking rear differential to the facelifted Sequoia, which also gets a standard 14-inch touchscreen.
At an estimated $74,000, the three-row SUV uses Toyota’s hybrid twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 with output expected near the regular model’s 437 hp and 583 lb-ft, delivering strong low-end torque on road and trail.
The test flagged trade-offs: a slow-shifting 10-speed transmission, no front sway-bar disconnect, and the Sequoia’s sheer size, which can make narrower trails awkward despite solid approach and departure angles.
Toyota positions Trailhunter as an SR5 package rather than a standalone trim, aiming the Sequoia at buyers weighing family space against off-road ability versus rivals like the Lexus GX, Defender 130 and Yukon AT4.
