Summary
Patricia Robinson, 90, got to Kelowna after two fellow passengers she had just met drove her about seven hours from Calgary when wildfire closures forced their Aug. 8 flight to turn back.
Western Canada wildfires shut the airspace about 50 minutes into the trip from Saskatoon, and later rebooked flights for all three travelers were canceled as uncertainty over further service grew.
Quinn Sedmak, 48, rented the car, Tanner Salewich, 45, joined the drive, and Robinson agreed rather than stay overnight in Calgary or return home; they left around 5 p.m. and arrived about 12:30 a.m.
The trio shared stories, gas and snack stops, and a selfie on the trip, then Robinson met her son at Kelowna airport and split the rental cost among the three.
Robinson, who turned 90 on Aug. 15 — the same day Salewich turned 45 — said the episode became one of her life's highlights after her family shared the story online.
