Elijah Bieniemy is facing three felony charges in Virginia and, if convicted on all counts, could face up to 33 years in prison. Authorities charged him with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling after the shooting that seriously injured his mother, Mia Bieniemy, at the family’s Ashburn, Virginia, home. Malicious wounding is the most serious count; under Virginia law it is a Class 3 felony punishable by five to 20 years in prison and a possible fine of up to $100,000. Discharging a firearm inside a dwelling is a Class 4 felony carrying two to 10 years, also with a possible fine of up to $100,000. The firearm charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of three years that must be served consecutively to any sentence imposed on the underlying felony. That is what pushes his maximum exposure to 33 years. Court records and reporting also indicate he has been held without bond in the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. His case has been delayed while he undergoes a competency evaluation after defense attorneys said he appears to suffer from serious mental health issues and may not currently be able to assist in his defense. As with any criminal case, the charges are allegations until proven in court.

One week into his return, Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said wife Mia Bieniemy is recovering well enough that she urged him to get back to training camp.
The leave followed a domestic incident involving one of the couple's sons, in which Mia Bieniemy suffered a gunshot wound.
Bieniemy said he stayed engaged while away by livestreaming practices, reviewing scripts and reacting in real time so he would not fall behind Kansas City's preseason work.
Back with a staff he last worked with in Kansas City in 2022, Bieniemy said the familiar environment helped during the family crisis as the Chiefs build toward their Sept. 14 opener.
