June 30 marked Rubin Observatory’s formal shift from commissioning to its 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time, a sustained program built to track how the southern sky changes over time.
From Cerro Pachon in Chile, the 8.4-meter telescope and 3,200-megapixel camera will capture about 1,000 images a night, revisit each survey point roughly 800 times, and issue alerts within about two minutes.
Those alerts can peak near 7 million a night, but they flag statistically significant changes—not 7 million new discoveries—and are filtered by community broker systems before researchers target follow-up observations.
Early operations had already shown the system working: Rubin sent about 800,000 scientific alerts on Feb. 24 and, over roughly six weeks of optimization, identified more than 11,000 previously unknown asteroids.
About 10 terabytes of data will flow nightly from Chile to SLAC in California, underscoring that Rubin’s scientific reach depends as much on repeated observations and fast processing as on its car-sized camera.
