Publix has removed the traditional 10-item cap from express checkout lanes, replacing some signs with "express" only while keeping the faster lanes in place.
The chain said the change gives store associates more flexibility to manage customer flow and cut wait times, letting them weigh traffic and order complexity instead of a fixed item count.
More than 1,400 Publix supermarkets operate across eight Southeastern states, though it was not immediately clear whether the updated policy applies at every location or when it took effect.
Online reaction was mixed: some shoppers argued an express lane without a limit becomes a regular lane, while others said item count alone does not determine transaction speed.
Self-checkout remains available at many stores, offering Publix another fast-pay option for customers with smaller purchases.
