Q: Is Christian McCaffrey's calf tightness a minor hiccup or a massive red flag for your first-round fantasy draft pick?

Christian McCaffrey’s calf tightness looks like more than a minor hiccup, but not yet a draft-killing red flag. The reason for caution is straightforward: he is 30, coming off an enormous 2025 workload of 413 regular-season touches, and he has a meaningful injury history. The phrase “tightness” is also uncomfortable in his case because a similar calf-related issue preceded the injury-plagued 2024 season. He has now missed more than a week of practice, which makes this something fantasy managers cannot dismiss. At the same time, the available team reporting has not described it as a serious structural problem. Kyle Shanahan has denied contract-related speculation and said McCaffrey likely would have played if this were a game week, framing the absence as precautionary so a minor issue does not become a muscle pull. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport also said it is not viewed as something to worry about right now. That keeps this from being treated as a full-blown emergency. For fantasy purposes, the real issue is price. McCaffrey still offers league-winning upside because of his unique receiving role and elite production when healthy. But at a top-six overall ADP, you are paying for near-best-case outcomes while absorbing above-average injury risk. That makes him a riskier first-round pick than safer elite options like Jahmyr Gibbs, Bijan Robinson or, for some drafters, Jonathan Taylor. If you draft today, McCaffrey is still a first-rounder, just no longer a comfortable one.
