Summary
Dr. Greg Golladay of VCU Health said chronic knee pain should be evaluated when it disrupts daily function, recreation, quality of life or sleep.
First-line treatment centers on conservative care—weight loss, low-impact exercise, oral or topical pain relievers, braces, physical therapy, and bone-health support such as vitamin D and calcium.
For patients who need more relief, VCU Health also offers injections—including steroid, gel and some biologic shots—while knee replacement surgery is typically held as the final option.
Robotic and less invasive procedures are among the newer tools Golladay said can improve precision and speed recovery, with treatment tailored to each patient.
VCU Health said its Richmond orthopedic sites offer same-day appointments, with Saturday visits available at Short Pump Pavilion.
