Penn State Doctor Urges Parents to Follow Routine Vaccines as School Season Nears

Summary
Berks County infectious disease physician Rutul Dalal urged parents preparing for school to consult their doctors and stick with routine childhood vaccinations despite a growing public debate.
Dalal said the debate itself could fuel vaccine hesitancy by making families think something is wrong with shots that protect against measles, mumps, rubella, whooping cough, diphtheria and tetanus.
Routine spacing changes would only add hassle and potentially higher costs through multiple provider visits, he said, rejecting the idea of spreading shots out.
Decades of research and recommendations from groups including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society still support universal childhood vaccination, Dalal said.
