Summary
Bulgaria said it has taken “all possible measures” at Bezmer Air Base after reports that Iran considered attacks on US military sites across Europe.
Bezmer was approved in July as a refuelling hub for US aircraft, and about 250 US personnel are allowed to remain there until October, making the base a visible support point for US operations.
NATO said it is prepared to counter any threat and cited its interception of four Iranian ballistic missiles fired toward Turkiye this year as evidence its deterrence posture is effective.
Iran had already warned Sofia that any party helping military attacks on Tehran would bear the consequences, and Tehran has repeatedly said states assisting US action could become targets.
The alert comes after a June US-Iran memorandum to end hostilities expired on Monday without a permanent deal, leaving no negotiations currently under way.
