James McAvoy was driven by a long-held ambition to direct and by a personal connection to the story’s social background. He said he had wanted to direct since he was 16, and after roughly 30 years as an actor learning from filmmakers, he felt ready to make the move behind the camera with *California Schemin’*. What made this project the one to do it with was its mix of entertainment and identity. McAvoy said he wanted his first film to tell a story about “lower-income, council estate kids” like those from his own background — young people with talent and ambition trying to escape limited circumstances. The true story of Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd, two Scottish rappers mocked for their accents who reinvented themselves as Californians to break into hip-hop, gave him exactly that. The material also offered a broader commentary on the music industry. Their scam worked because image, branding and perceived authenticity could matter as much as talent, allowing the duo to secure a Sony deal, MTV airplay and proximity to stars like Eminem and D12 before the deception collapsed. That made the film more than a quirky caper: it became a story about class, access, performance and the cost of chasing fame. So McAvoy’s decision was fueled by both craft and conviction — a lifelong desire to direct, and a chance to tell a distinctly Scottish, working-class story in a highly entertaining way.

The first trailer for James McAvoy’s feature directorial debut, “California Schemin’,” has premiered ahead of the film’s Oct. 9 theatrical release.
Set in the early 2000s, the film follows two Scottish rappers who pose as Californians to break into U.S. hip-hop, winning a Sony deal before their deception starts to collapse.
McAvoy also appears as record-label boss Anthony Reed, who buys into the act, while the cast includes Séamus McLean Ross, Samuel Bottomley, Lucy Halliday and Rebekah Murrell.
The project adapts Gavin Bain’s memoir—later retitled “Straight Outta Scotland”—and revisits a story previously explored in the 2013 documentary “The Great Hip Hop Hoax.”
For McAvoy, the film caps a 30-year acting career with a long-sought move into directing; it premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival to a positive review.
