An 8-year-old Sudbury boy died after a falling tree struck him Tuesday morning at YMCA Camp Chickami in Wayland, the West Suburban YMCA said.
10:45 a.m. first responders found the child and a camp employee hit after a large tree fell and brought down other trees; the boy was struck by a large branch and later died at Massachusetts General Hospital.
The employee suffered minor injuries and was treated and released, while campers were sent home early and Camp Chickami will stay closed for the rest of the week.
West Suburban YMCA said it is offering grief counseling and support resources to staff, campers and families as Wayland officials said the community was grieving the loss.
