Summary
Public Policy Polling found Ed Markey ahead of Seth Moulton 53% to 22% among likely Democratic primary voters in Massachusetts, giving the 80-year-old senator a commanding edge less than two weeks before the Sept. 1 election.
The Aug. 17-18 survey of 645 likely primary voters reinforces two earlier polls this week that also showed Markey leading—52%-38% in a Suffolk/Boston Globe poll and 60%-32% in a UMass Amherst/WCVB poll.
Moulton, 47, has centered his campaign on Markey’s age and nearly 50 years in Congress, arguing Democrats need a new generation of leadership, but one poll found 49% said Markey turning 80 made no difference.
The race still appears lower-profile than Markey’s 2020 primary against Joe Kennedy III: ad spending has reached $9.7 million this year versus $16.1 million in 2020, with a final debate set for Thursday.
