244,000 people were unemployed in July because 125,000 workers lost jobs and 119,000 previously unavailable people started seeking work, exceeding the 141,000 who found jobs and 95,000 who left the labor force.
Men drove the increase: their unemployment rate rose to 4.0% from 3.8%, with the sharpest rise among ages 15 to 45, while women's rate edged down to 3.9% from 4.0%.
27 of 35 labor-market regions posted more benefit recipients, led by Twente at 7.0%, Achterhoek at 3.5% and Gorinchem at 3.4%; Zuid-Limburg, Flevoland and Zuid-Holland Centraal recorded declines.
Over the past three months, unemployment rose by an average 2,000 people a month, while the number outside the labor force increased by 9,000 monthly to 3.2 million in July.
