Summary
Texas prosecutors told a new judge that jurors never heard text messages and other material they say showed Karmelo Anthony’s interest in knives and violence, as they opposed his bid to overturn his murder conviction.
The state said Anthony’s original lawyers made an oral deal to keep character evidence about Anthony and the Metcalf brothers out of trial; his new team says prosecutors broke that understanding and undermined his decision on whether to testify.
Defense lawyers instead pressed more than 40 exhibits and at least 12 witnesses to argue the jury missed evidence supporting self-defense, while also attacking limited public access, off-the-record rulings and jury instructions.
Judge Michael Chitty took over after Judge John Roach was removed for comments that the jury “got it right,” but Anthony’s June conviction and 35-year sentence remain in place unless Chitty grants a new trial.
Monday is the deadline under Texas’s 75-day rule; if Chitty does not act, the motion is denied automatically and Anthony’s case moves into a longer direct appeal.
