A third confirmed measles case was recorded in Allegany County, with the latest infection found in the Town of Independence — the first confirmed or presumed case outside New Hudson.
At least 14 presumed positive cases are now under investigation, including as many as four added since Aug. 15, as health officials trace a potential common exposure linked to horse auctions and travel in New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
The Independence infection is not linked to the county's initial Aug. 2 case involving a resident who had traveled to Ohio, suggesting more than one transmission path may be involved.
County officials said overall community risk remains low, but urged unvaccinated people, infants under 1, pregnant women and immunocompromised residents to watch for symptoms that can appear 7 to 21 days after exposure.
