Niagara Region Public Health detected a single Aedes albopictus mosquito in Lincoln, Ontario, through routine surveillance and said the specimen tested negative for mosquito-borne viruses.
The Asian tiger mosquito is an aggressive daytime biter that can transmit West Nile, dengue, Chikungunya and Zika, but officials said the find does not change the area's current virus risk.
Residents were urged to cut standing water around homes and use insect repellent, with public health framing the notice as part of keeping communities informed when newer mosquito species appear.
Aedes albopictus is native to Southeast Asia and has previously been found in Windsor since 2016, suggesting the species is already established elsewhere in Ontario.
