Expert Explains Why 19 Stourbridge Homes Burned as 85 Families Returned

Summary
Nineteen homes were destroyed and another 18 severely damaged in last week's Stourbridge fire, even as some neighboring properties appeared almost untouched.
Dr. Tony Fogarty said the uneven damage came from shifting wind, burning embers and radiant heat, which can ignite or damage homes without flames directly reaching them.
He said what sits between a fire and a house often decides the outcome: sheds, fences, decking and dry vegetation add fuel, while patios and bare areas can act as firebreaks.
Of 96 evacuated houses, 85 families have returned and 13 households were able to go back to damaged homes, while residents whose properties survived said the destruction still felt random.
Fogarty said tinder-dry conditions made the blaze far more unpredictable, with small ignition sources able to spread quickly and produce the patchy destruction seen across five streets.
