A meta-analysis of nearly 6,800 gut microbiome sequencing profiles found a consistent microbial signature tied to colorectal cancer, including early-stage tumors and some precancerous adenomas.
The 25-study dataset combined technically different sequencing methods, and researchers said the signal remained consistent across fecal and tumor-site samples and in both early-onset and late-onset patients.
Diet appeared linked to that signature: lower fiber intake correlated with more cancer-like microbiome patterns, while some fiber-boosting interventions reduced the colorectal-cancer classifier score.
Current microbiome classifiers still trail established stool blood tests such as FIT and tumor-DNA approaches, but researchers said combining them with existing tests and shifting to cheaper qPCR panels could improve screening use.
The study was observational, so it cannot prove the microbes cause cancer, though it strengthens the case for microbiome-based screening and potentially broader multi-disease stool diagnostics.
