A major air-and-sea search began after a man was reported missing from the MS Ambition at about 08:35 while the cruise ship was roughly 36 nautical miles off Arbroath.
Coastguard aircraft from Prestwick and Carlisle, a commercial rescue helicopter, lifeboats from Anstruther and Broughty Ferry, and rescue teams from Dundee, Arbroath and St Andrews were deployed alongside nearby vessels.
The ship later docked in Dundee from Lerwick, with passengers initially kept onboard before disembarking around 11:30 as police inquiries continued and the man's next of kin were informed.
BBC Scotland said the passenger's luggage remained onboard and his bed had not been slept in; another passenger said repeated tannoy announcements had called a specific name Friday morning.
MS Ambition had been returning from a two-week tour of Shetland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands; Ambassador Cruise Lines said it was following stringent search-and-rescue protocols with coastguard and police.
