Summary
Forty people in Minnesota and Wisconsin have been sickened in linked E. coli and salmonella outbreaks tied to alfalfa sprouts, with three hospitalizations and no reported deaths.
Health officials traced the illnesses to sprouts produced by Minnesota grower Everything Sprouts and sold under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands at restaurants and grocery stores.
Minnesota recorded 23 illnesses between July 8 and Aug. 8, while Wisconsin confirmed 17 cases; both states said the total will likely rise as more cases are identified.
Consumers are being told to throw out any sprouts from those brands and seek care if symptoms worsen, while the CDC, FDA and other states help investigate the contamination source and scope.
