The two had known each other since living at Nashville's Adelicia complex, where Swift bought a penthouse in 2009 and Panettiere moved in three years later while filming ABC's Nashville.
Their friendship surfaced publicly in 2012, when Panettiere recalled on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that Swift lent her a guitar for a songwriting session through two security guards.
Swift also called Panettiere a friend and neighbor during Red-era promotion in 2012, and the source said Panettiere continued speaking highly of Swift as they crossed paths at events over the years.
Panettiere began acting in 1994 at age 4 and is survived by her parents, Skip Panettiere and Lesley Vogel, and her daughter, Kaya Klitschko.
