16,414 newtons—about 3,700 pounds of force—gave a 4.59-meter saltwater crocodile the Guinness record for the hardest laboratory-measured bite of any living animal.
Gregory Erickson’s team reached that figure by testing adults from all 23 living crocodilian species on the same force transducer, finding bite force scaled closely with body size rather than snout shape, teeth or diet.
Crocodiles generate that power with massive jaw-closing muscles packed into the back half of the skull, while the muscles that open the mouth are comparatively small and weak.
That imbalance underpins handling protocols: rope and tape can keep a crocodile’s jaws shut, but researchers needed an 18-kilonewton jaw prop to hold alligator mouths open during veterinary work.
