ORNL, IBM Run First Quantum Calculations on FLiBe for Fusion Tritium Research

Summary
A joint ORNL, Cleveland Clinic and IBM study performed the first known quantum-computing calculations on molecular structures in FLiBe, a molten salt eyed for fusion reactors’ liquid blankets.
FLiBe matters because those blankets could breed tritium fuel, and the team used quantum-centric supercomputing to test how tritium interacts with the salt at the molecular level.
Thiago J. Pinheiro, less than 1 year after finishing his Rice PhD, generated molecular-dynamics structures and classical baseline energies that seeded the electronic-structure calculations on quantum hardware.
The work combined classical high-performance computing with IBM quantum systems to gauge where emerging quantum tools can complement supercomputers on hard materials problems.
At a broader level, the project targets a key fusion bottleneck: understanding and eventually recovering enough tritium from candidate blanket materials to sustain future reactors.
