That points to evaluation, not a hidden decision already made. Altmyer’s preseason usage has fueled the question. In the opener against Cincinnati, he played 44 snaps to Dobbs’ 22 and was given an extended chance to run the offense. Campbell later explained that imbalance partly by timing: Dobbs had only recently joined the team and needed time to get up to speed, while Altmyer needed “a million reps” as a promising young quarterback. Altmyer’s stat line — 13 of 22 for 130 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions — was uneven, but the staff has been encouraged by his poise and growth. Dobbs still appears to have the inside track because of his NFL experience, and Detroit’s decision to give him early first-half reps with the better offensive line in the opener suggested the staff wants to see whether he can stabilize the backup role quickly. But Altmyer has done enough to prevent this from becoming a formality. So the Lions are not quietly demoting Dobbs. They are openly testing whether Altmyer’s development is real enough to challenge the veteran before the regular season.
