Summary
Four joint-replacement patients at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown were allegedly injected in the spine with potassium phosphate instead of bupivacaine, and at least one woman was left paralyzed.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said Saturday it opened a probe after the Tennessee Healthcare Facilities Commission passed along information Friday about the hospital’s acknowledged pharmacy medication error.
One family said the woman has no feeling from her breastbone down and that treatment has not restored function; CBS News reported a second patient also says they were paralyzed.
Hospital CEO Shubhada Jagasia said the facility self-reported the incident the day it happened, identified the cause, and put corrective safeguards and enhanced safety protocols in place.
