Summary
Twenty-three people in Minnesota and 18 in Wisconsin fell ill after eating alfalfa sprouts tied to Minnesota grower Everything Sprouts, adding another produce-linked outbreak to recent recalls.
Alfalfa sprouts carry elevated contamination risk because they are grown in warm, humid conditions—often hydroponically—and tainted water can spread both E. coli and salmonella.
University of Minnesota food safety educator Autumn Stoll said children, older adults, pregnant people and immunocompromised consumers should avoid sprouts or cook them to 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever, usually starting 12 to 96 hours after exposure but sometimes taking up to two weeks.
Stoll said the recall reflects stronger testing, tracking and consumer reporting, which may be surfacing more outbreaks rather than signaling a breakdown in food-safety systems.
