A 15-year-old boy was arrested Saturday on suspicion of murder, firearm offenses and gang participation after a shooting during Friday night’s game at Independence High School left a 17-year-old dead.
Police said the suspect and victim knew each other, a fight involving several people broke out before the gunfire, and investigators do not believe the attack was random or tied directly to the game.
The shooting happened inside the stadium’s exterior fence but outside the field barrier shortly after 8 p.m., sending players and spectators running and forcing cancellation of the season opener against Centennial High School.
Authorities said neither teen attended Independence High, no additional suspects are believed to be outstanding, and the gun has not been recovered as the investigation continues.
Kern High School District said counseling and other support services will be offered while officials review how the campus shooting unfolded.
