Summary
More than 450 people displaced by Nevada’s Hawk Fire spent Saturday night at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, while another 200 stayed in cars, campers and RVs in the parking lot using shelter services.
Strong winds and dry conditions drove the fire’s rapid spread Saturday, triggering broad evacuation orders in northwest Reno, Sommerset and the North Valleys.
By early Sunday, the blaze had burned more than 10,500 acres and was threatening nearly 1,000 homes, with evacuation warnings extending into Sierra County, California.
Red Cross workers, Washoe County staff and partners are providing meals, water, health care and emotional support, and said the convention center still has room to expand or open another shelter if needed.
