Summary
Pierre Michel Formosa, 68, was found dead in Death Valley after he and another French traveler abandoned a car stuck in mud on West Side Road on Aug. 17.
The two men walked across salt flats toward Badwater Road in 116-degree heat with little shade; after about 1.3 miles, Formosa could not continue and his companion went on alone for help.
Park Service rangers, an Inyo County deputy and a California Highway Patrol helicopter began searching after the companion reached a passing driver and reported the emergency shortly after 2 p.m.
A helicopter located Formosa about 1.5 miles from Badwater Road, and he was pronounced dead at the scene; the Inyo County coroner will determine the cause and manner of death.
Death Valley summer temperatures can reach 130 degrees, and the case follows at least four apparent heat-related deaths reported in June at Grand Canyon National Park.
