Summary
Rep. Yu Yong-weon said South Korea should consider sending its Cheongung-II interceptor system to Ukraine, arguing the move would fit Seoul’s long-held ban on supplying lethal weapons to countries at war.
Zelenskyy made the request last week as Ukraine faces more missiles, drones and North Korean forces fighting alongside Russia, and Yu framed the system as defensive equipment meant to protect civilians and infrastructure.
Yu said a Cheongung-II deployment could also serve South Korea’s own security by generating data relevant to countering North Korea’s short-range ballistic missile threat.
The proposal adds a humanitarian and strategic case for deeper Seoul-Kyiv cooperation after Zelenskyy suggested Ukraine could offer South Korea drone technology in return.
