Summary
Shunkai has begun operating at Japan's Institute for Molecular Science as the country's first full-stack neutral-atom quantum computer, starting with about 50 qubits and integrating hardware and software in one system.
Hitachi built the software stack and Infleqtion the quantum processing unit, while IMS uses laser-controlled neutral atoms that can run at room temperature and are designed to improve scalability and error correction.
About 500 qubits are the next scaling target, and the system will be partially opened to external researchers for application development and for testing and improving quantum error-correction methods.
By March 2031, the Moonshot R&D project aims to turn Shunkai into a fault-tolerant neutral-atom machine with 10,000 physical qubits, error detection and correction, and access for outside users.
